A late morning crash in southern Ocean County resulted in two people being airlifted to a trauma center, according to the Stafford Township Police Department.
Officers from the Stafford Township Police Department responded to a multi-vehicle collision on Route 72 near Marsha Drive on Friday around 10:30 a.m.
A 2000 Mazda Miata driven by Brenda Evans, 61, of Manahawkin was stopped in the right lane at a red light on Route 72 westbound at Marsha Drive. She was struck in the rear by a 2001 Nissan Altima driven by Alois Krtil, 82, of Ship Bottom.
After the two vehicles collided, they both struck a third vehicle, a 2016 Honda CRV, driven by Helen Licker, 75, of Delaware who was stopped in the left lane of Route 72 westbound at a traffic signal.
Evans and Krtil both sustained serious injuries from the collision and were transported via helicopter to the Atlantic City Trauma Center for treatment.
Traffic on westbound Route 72 was diverted onto East Bay Avenue for an hour during the investigation.
